Environmental governance within NAB is currently provided through our Group Environment Management Committee. Membership of the committee includes representatives from our business and our facilities managers in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

This committee reports through to our Group Operational Risk and Compliance Committee, which reviews our environmental risks and performance along with other CSR-related matters and approves all Group-wide environmental policies. In addition, our Board also receives regular reports.

Environmental management across the Group is undertaken on a regional basis due to differences in regional regulatory requirements and operating practices. Our environmental management policies and practices are structured to reflect the ISO14001 framework.

We developed our first environmental policy in 2003. It was most recently reviewed in June 2007.

Our Environmental Policy  and management system covers:

  • our environmental commitments,
  • compliance with legislation,
  • reducing our environmental footprint,
  • considering environmental risk in our products and services,
  • working with our suppliers,
  • building the environmental awareness of our employees and stakeholders,
  • and measuring and reporting publicly on our performance.

Day-to-day environmental management is carried out by relevant business units in consultation with CR personnel.

Our major direct environmental impacts arise from our building use and equipment, as well as our day-to-day activities. Our key activities that lead to direct environmental aspects and impacts include:

  • selecting, fitting-out and operating buildings (including using back-up generators, heating, cooling and ventilation)
  • office activities generating waste requiring disposal or recycling including paper, toner cartridges, packaging and general waste
  • maintenance and cleaning
  • selecting, operating and maintaining electrical equipment - in particular the data centres and computers
  • travel (by land and air).

Our major direct environmental impacts include generating greenhouse emissions through energy use and waste disposal to landfill.

Our indirect environmental impacts are addressed by our CR Procurement Policy, supply chain relationships and management practices, and our environmental credit risk assessment policies and processes.

We annually report our environmental performance in our CR Review and CR Detailed Facts & Information pack.
